The History of the Journal

The Brazilian Journal of Mother and Child Health (BJMCH) / Revista Brasileira de Saúde Materno Infantil (RBSMI) is an international journal published by IMIP with the mission of disseminating scientific articles addressing research on woman, pregnant woman and child’s health in its clinical and epidemiological dimensions. In this regard, the journal is articulated with the same goals as IMIP, its sponsor institution.
BJMCH is the continuation of IMIP Journal that has been uninterrupted since its founding in 1987 until 2000.
The presence of Professor Fernando Figueira was fundamental in these ventures, as a Medical Editor and founder of IMIP Journal and he was a great encourager for the BJMCH. This broadened IMIP Journal to its achievement in becoming an international Journal.
BJMCH is open to health researchers from around the world. Most published articles have not only come from Brazil, but from all Latin America, Portuguese-speaking African countries, Portugal and Spain.
The selection of each article strictly follows the following procedures:
Once receiving the corresponding manuscript, it is verified by a checklist, a compliance with the minimum requirements of the Journal editorial (mission, scope and article category) and then distributed to the Editor of the field to be submitted and analyzed by two Ad Hoc Reviewers to evaluate the scientific merit. In the event of a disagreement between the reviewers, a third reviewer is requested for his/her opinion. From the reviewers’ opinion and the Associated Editors and the Executive Editor’s judgment, the manuscript receives one of the following classifications: 1) accepted; 2) Recommended, but with alterations to be made; 3) Not recommended for publication. In classification 2, the reviewers’ opinion are sent to the author(s), who has the opportunity to review and resubmit to the Journal accompanied by a letter replying the detailed items the reviewers have been suggested and along with the modification; in classification 3, the manuscript is returned to the author(s); in case of acceptance, the article is published according to the quantity of the manuscripts and the Journal editorial chronogram. Since the Journal adopts the Scholar One System to manage the quantity of manuscripts, understanding the whole process, the authors may accompany all the steps in the editing process of their article. The authors are required to have an English version of the manuscript in addition to the Portuguese or Spanish version.
Language reviewers will correct any language errors. Prior to the publication of the article, the proof of the manuscript is submitted to the author(s) for a final conference and approval. The article is only published after the author(s) approve the text.

The average processing time until each article is published is 6 months.
We receive an average of 120 manuscripts in each trimester in which we publish between 9 and 12 articles maintaining an average of 7.7% of acceptance for each issue.
